A Study to assess the Knowledge regarding Information and Computer Application among staff Nurses in Selected Hospital, Bangalore

ABSTRACT:

Objectives: To assess the knowledge regarding information and computer application among staff nurses in selected hospital, Bangalore.  Methods: The study was conducted in Rangadhore memorial hospital, Bangalore. A quantitative evaluative approach and descriptive research design was adopted. 30 staff nurses selected by simple random sampling method. Structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge. Results: The study revealed that 60% of staff nurses had inadequate knowledge and 40% had moderately adequate knowledge.

INTRODUCTION:

Computer influence nursing professional in many way and inducing the work load and that will enhance the nurses to give quality nursing care. Nurses all round the world have reason to the challenge of new technology. Mainly it can be used in nursing documentation. Nursing requires computer a competency first of all nurses should have positive attitudes towards the innovation in nursing practice.

 

Nursing informatics is the law emerging field in our profession which will prepare the nurses to use computers in our field effectively. Keeping this in the view the Indian nursing council introduced the subject of computers in nursing and made a mandatory subject in all nursing courses to enhance the knowledge and skill towards computer application in nursing profession. Still the application of computer is limited, only to completion of syllabus and examination. The application of this knowledge is yet to go a long way.

 

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A study to assess the knowledge regarding information and computer application among staff nurses in selected hospital, Bangalore.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1.     To assess the knowledge regarding information and computer application among staff nurses in Rangadore memorial hospital

2.     To find out the association between knowledge regarding information and computer application and selected demographic variables.

 

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION:

Assess: Assess refers to the process of critical analysis and valuation or quality of a particular condition or situation.

 

KNOWLEDGE:

it refers to the understanding and assessing the knowledge of information and computer application among staff nurses.

 

Hospital:

An institution providing medical and surgical treatment and nursing care for sick or injured people.

Computer application: 

Computer programme is a group of coordinate functions, tasks or activities for the benefit of the users.

 

Staff nurses:

A person who works in a hospital taking care of ill and injured.

 

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Research approach:

Non-experimental quantitative approach.

 

Research Design:

descriptive research design

 

Setting:

The study was conducted in Rangadhore memorial hospital, Bangalore

 

Population:

Staff nurses who are working in Rangadore memorial hospital, Bangalore.

 

Sample:

the sample of the study comprised of 30 staff nurses in Rangadore memorial hospital, Bangalore

 

Sampling Technique:

Simple random sampling technique.

 

Criteria for sample selection:

Inclusion criteria:

1    Staff nurses who are willing to participate in the study.

2    Staff nurses who are available at the time of data collection.

 

Exclusion criteria:

1    Staff nurses who have the knowledge of computer application

2    Staff nurses who were not available at time of data collection.

 

Data Collection Tools and Techniques:

A structured questionnaire was developed for assessing the knowledge of information and computer application among staff nurses.

 

Description of the tool:

The questionnaire was designed with two parts:

Part: 1 it Consist of demographic variables

Part: 2 it Consist of knowledge questionnaire regarding   information and computer application among staff nurses.

 

RESULTS:

1. To assess the knowledge on information and computer application among staff nurses.

2. To find out the association between knowledge regarding information and computer application with their selected demographic variables like gender and qualification was found to have significant association with level of knowledge 0.05 level

 

CONCLUSION:

Computer influences every sphere of human activity and bring many changes in education, health care and scientific research etc. computer can perform a wide range of activity in that save time and help nurses to provide quality nursing care.

 

RECOMMENDATION:

On the basis of the findings of the study following recommendations have been made

1.       The study can be conducted as a large sample

2.       A comparative study can be conducted in different settings

3.       A self instructional module can be expressed to enhance knowledge regarding information and computer application.
